Omni ! is an alternative hip-hop trio from Atlanta, GA. The three members, Dawvro, J’aime, and JoVaughn Simmons grew up in a small, “racist ass town” 40 minutes outside of Atlanta called Calhoun. Some of the members grew up listening to artists like Chamillionaire and Eminem, and other members grew up listening to church music, but were later introduced to hip-hop through video games. Today, the group lists their most significant influences as AG Club, BROCKHAMPTON, A$AP Rocky, Timbaland, DJ Screw, and Run The Jewels. Much like Van Buren Records and Bums, the group’s members have skillsets that exceed rapping. Dawvro produces all of the group’s music, JoVaughn mixes it all, and the two are visual artists as well, doing much of the group’s graphic design, photography, and video editing.
The story of how the group formed began when Dawvro began making beats in middle school. He wanted to make music, but didn’t want to make it alone. In 8th grade, he met J’aime who shared a similar taste in music. The next year, they met JoVaughn in high school when they were assigned as partners in a computer class. Fast forward 3-4 years and JoVaughn decided to drop out of college and spend $5K on music equipment and Omni ! was officially live. The three started making demos en masse, which Omni ! refers to more as “ringtones” since they would just be a hook and a verse.
Omni ! dropped their debut project in October 2021, Dopeboys. As the producer of the album, Dawvro said the beats were largely influenced by Kenny Beats, Timbaland, AG Club, and Baby Keem. The project is highlighted by the songs “Willie,” “Black Minivan,” and “Tony.” In February 2023, the group returned with their sophomore project, Peachtree. The project saw highs on tracks like “Pop!” and “Mike Jones.”
